This large parish church at the source of the Avon was completed before work begun on the later cathedral. It is a fine example of early gothic work with traces of its Norman origins. One unusual feature is the penitential pew with its hand covered in latin inscriptions, it is a remarkable and curious survival from the C17, or perhaps earlier. The chancel , like Urchfont and Great Bedwyn is almost as long as the nave and is finely vaulted. None of the original glass survives but it does have glass of a high quality by Wailes. I believe Cannings were bought by an American company, MacDermid of Denver, Colorado in 1998.
